The UK sensation The Darkness has already begun to have a following due to the release of their single “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”. Their debut album “Permission to Land” was released at the end of last year. The Darkness is a band that embodies pure enjoyment. The songs on the album aren’t about politics or world issues (and I’m not saying it is a bad thing when this is the case), which gives the album a light hearted feel. They are the type of songs were you can sing your heart out. Not all the songs on the album are as upbeat as their first single. “Love on the Rocks with No Ice” is darker but still has that higher pitched chorus which is a standard it seems for the band. The last song on the album “Holding My Own” is a beautiful and mellow song, which ends the album perfectly.

The album is good, but not phenomenal. However, they are the type of band that will get better album by album until their time in the music biz is up. The first time I heard “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” I disliked it immensely. The more I heard it, which was an insane amount because it has become a radio favourite, it grew on me and now I love it. The songs need a few listens to really get a feel for the album, but in the end it will be one I will listen to for years to come.

The Darkness is not a complicated band. In fact they are pretty standard. The titles of their songs aren’t a mystery since they are repeated within the chorus a number of times. But the band gives off a feeling that most bands are missing. They possess a chemistry that makes them better then the average person who starts a band with their friends and dreams of being famous. The Darkness actually has quality and good rock out songs, therefore, actually deserve success. I have to admit they are a bit reminiscent of 80s hair bands, but without that bad cheesy quality. The band is fun and you don’t have to feel guilty for loving them. So if you like “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, but you still aren’t sure if you want to album I recommend that you wait to hear their next single and if you like it go buy “Permission to Land”.
