Jenn Watt responds to Nicholas Cole

I felt that I needed to respond to your e-mail, since I was one of the people collecting signatures for the petitions against international student tuition hikes.
I'd like to assure you that the petitions WERE presented to the Board of Governors in a legal and respectful manner.
The CSA and GSA wrote a letter including the number of signatures on the petitions that was included in the budget package for every Board member. A representative of the GSA presented it to the Board and it was well received.
I think what happened at the Board of Governors meeting was very positive because such a range of students were represented there. Those students who are not interested in protesting had their voices heard through the petition, the Student Budget Advisory Group report and the joint letter from the CSA and GSA. Likewise, international students had a representative at the meeting who presented their point of view.
However, there were students who felt that further steps needed to be taken to show the Board of Governors the level of anger and dissent present on campus. I think this was useful too.
In closing, I'd like to thank you for signing the petition and caring about international students on campus. Be assured that your signature was presented in the formal, procedurally-correct manner that you were hoping for.
I hope this clears things up.
