Unwanted junk can be a huge pain when it comes to moving out – you don’t want to throw out useable stuff, but you don’t want the headache of trying to find a home for it either. Well, Move Out Madness is designed to help ease your hurried and worried mind! A collaboration between Neighbourhood Relations & Off-campus Housing, University of Guelph Sustainability, Meal Exchange, Guelph Students for Environmental Change, Freecycle.org, and the City of Guelph, the program has three components: Bulky Item Pick-up (April 9 to 27th), Stuff Swap (April 2 – 13th), and Clear the Shelves (April 9 – 20th).

Bulky Item Pick-up is an excellent way to get rid of large items like tables, chairs, appliances, couches, and beds. All you have to do is simply sign up at the Move Out Madness table in the UC between 1 – 4pm until Friday and pick-up dates will be scheduled between April 9 – 27th. Pick up is free and items collected will be donated to charity, stored until the Goods Exchange Weekend in September, or thrown out if unusable. You will be asked to indicate the condition of your item at the sign-up table to ensure it’s put to the most appropriate use or disposed of if necessary.

Stuff Swap is a chance to drop off any unwanted reusable stuff (school supplies, household items, etc.) and to pick up any items that you may want or need. Stop by the UC between from now until Friday to drop off or pick up items at the Move Out Madness Stuff Swap tables.

Finally, Clear the Shelves is a great opportunity to donate your non-perishable food items and clothing to local charities. From Monday the 9th till Friday the 20th look for Clear the Shelves collection bins at residence desks and at the UC. One bin is for non-perishable food and clothing and the other for household items, school supplies, toys, games, etc.

And while you’re at it, Freecycle.org is another great resource to check out: it offers a forum to find someone to pick up your furniture and large appliances for free. Check out the network at www.freecycle.org.

Make sure to take advantage of Move Out Madness services to donate items to those who need them and to aid the environment by diverting items from landfill for reuse within the Guelph community. For more information, email .
