Guelph opened the 2005-2006 campaign in winning fashion and avenged last year’s early playoff exit with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Queens Golden Gaels. Guelph opened the scoring early, two minutes into the game. Putting Guelph up 1-0 was Becky Simpson (Corbyville, ON). The goal was Simpson’s first as a Gryphon. When asked after the game, Simpson said, “I struggled last year, I feel stronger. It was great to finally get the first one. I’m out to prove myself this year”. Guelph continued to put pressure on the Queens defence, and went up 2-0 when Elysia Desmier (Ottawa, ON) scored. Queen’s got on the scoreboard to end the first period 2-1. The second period saw Guelph take a commanding lead with goals from Desmier (her second of the game) and Nicole Latreille (Nepean, ON). The third period saw no goal scoring and Guelph was content to play a defensive game and run out the clock. In goal for the Gryphons was Aleisha Lusk (Mitchell, ON) who stopped 31 shots for the victory. In goal for Queen’s was Melissa John who stopped 32 shots. Both teams were 0 for 5 on the powerplay.

Up next for the Gryphons is a road game against the defending CIS Champions and #1 ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is October 12, 2005 at 7:30 at the Waterloo Recreation Centre.
