More than 1,500 U of G students celebrated Halloween in a special way this year - volunteering their time to help those in need in the Guelph community.

Led by the U of G chapter of Meal Exchange, teams of costumed volunteers went door-to-door collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Guelph Food Bank.

After a long night  filling shopping carts with donated food, Trick or Eat volunteers ensured that their haul went straight to helping the community, unloading and sorting their piles of goodies at the Guelph Food Bank.

According to organizers, more than 39,000 pounds of food were collected as part of the Trick or Eat campaign, roughly the same amount as last year.

Meal Exchange, a national registered charity run by students, organizes the annual event on campuses across Canada.

Meal Exchange aims to offer communities creative and meaningful programs that harness student energy with the goal of reducing local hunger. The University of Guelph chapter is no exception, organizing projects like Skip a Meal that allow students to donate money from their meal plans to support local agencies.

According to Meal Exchange Guelph, 1 in every 5 people in Guelph is at the risk of being hungry. More than 3300 individuals are served by the Guelph Food Bank per month, with nearly half of them aged 16 or younger.
