Remember to dial all your digits

Monday, August 28, 2006

For those of returning to Guelph in the next couple of weeks, please remember that the 519 area code is now the proud home of 10-digit dialing.

The 519 covers not only Guelph but Kitchener, Waterloo, London, Windsor, Sarnia, Brandtford, Stratford, Owen Sound and Orangeville as well; taking in approximately 2.3 million people. So because it covers this big area and with the explosion of cell phones, pagers, fax machines, Blackberries and other PDAs, come October 14th, the new area code of 226 will be added to Guelph and surrounding areas. This new code will only be applied to new phone numbers once all 519 numbers have been depleted.

For the time being if you forget to add the add the 519 when making a local call, a pre-record message will remind you of the change up before putting your call through. But you’ll have to catch on fast because come October the message will be gone and you’re on your own.
