0 CommentsHurricane Gustav was a category 5 hurricane as it hit Cuba a few days ago, and has been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane at the time of writing. It is currently battering New Orleans and Louisiana. The vast majority (95%) of people in threatened areas of the US have been evacuated. So far there are no reported deaths within the US, but up to 100 have been reported in the Caribbean.
High winds, heavy rain and flying debris are making it difficult for emergency crews to move in the New Orleans area. In many areas power has been knocked out, and crews say they cannot begin to restore power until winds reduce to at least 30 miles per hour.
There are some areas where the levees have been breached, or are close to failing. Many crews are on site trying to reinforce them with sandbags. Many of the levees so far have been successful in keeping the water out, and the storm is expected to slow considerably over the coming day.
Another tropical storm named Hannah is currently swelling and may hit land within the next few days. Thecannon.ca will keep you informed as these stories develop.
The Republican National Convention has also been impacted by these storms. It was scheduled to open today, and still will, but has scaled back from 7 hours to 3 hours.
