Despite cloudy skies, the rain held off as the Guelph Gryphons football team took on Queen's Golden Gaels Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Guelph won the coin toss but deferred to Queen's. A field goal each tied the first quarter at 3-3. A 19 yard field goal in the second by Julian Tropea upped Guelph to 6-3. Chris Rossetti ran in a 1 yard touchdown with five minutes left in the second.

With another touchdown by Jedd Gardner in the third, the Gryphons led 20-8. The Gaels pushed forward but the 2009 Vanier Cup Champions couldn't deliver the much needed last touchdown. The final score was 21-15. Guelph now sits at 3-0, and Queen's 1-2.

The newly formed University of Guelph Cheerleaders showed off their skills and there were a great number of student volunteers in attendance at Alumni Stadium.

Noise wise however, Queen's fans definitely overpowered the Guelphites. Perhaps it was the bagpipes: an entire section of the stadium was taken up by Gaels supporters complete with kilts and accompanied by a (sitting) marching band.

Hopefully fans will come out in greater numbers next week, and bring a few bells to show their support for the Gryphons when the Western Mustangs come to play next Saturday for Homecoming 2010. Kickoff is at 1:00pm.
